Shrinking Shores

Sea level rise could eventually threaten billions of dollars of homes, businesses and infrastructure along our coast, but our iconic beaches could take the first hit as rising waters drown and erode them. We still have time to slow, if not stop, the advancing tide, but it will take a concerted effort by us all. Public awareness and involvement will be essential. At this event, we will create delineate on the beach projections of future sea level, enabling the public view how their beach will change over time.

On Saturday, June 3rd, we will provide a physical representation of beach loss by staking and flagging the location of future tide lines on Stinson Beach. Our Community Development Staff will be present with information about how the County is planning for sea level rise and reducing our carbon footprint.

SOS! Save Algae Reefs in Taiwan

Algae Reefs, mainly built by the calcareous red algae, are one the most spectacular landscapes along the coastline of Taoyuan City, Taiwan. Just like the tropical coral reefs, algae reefs in Taiwan also provide similar ecological services, such as fishery, tourisms, education, and coast protection. Nevertheless, a tank docking port for liquid natural gas (LNG) receiving station is planned and readily to constructed by August, 2017 by the Chinese Petroleum Cooperation (CPC) at the Datan District, Taoyuan City, if the environmental impact assessment is approved. Once this project is initiated, there will be over 300 hectares immediately land-filled and subsequently biodiversity and ecosystem lost. The environmental NGOs and local communities at the Datan and neighbor Districts have raised their concerns and protest to the city and central governments regarding to the habitat destruction of mass areas of algae reefs by this CPC-LNG station developmental project.

On June, 8, 2017, the Oceans Day, the environmental NGOs, local communities, and marine scientists gathered at the Datan algae reefs to celebrate this important event with people from the world, and at the meantime to take the action to raise the international attention of the crisis that algae reefs will be dramatically lost due to the CPC-LNG receiving development. The sign of “SOS! ALGAE REEFS” was laid on the beach close to the Datan algae reefs, and the drone flied over volunteers and reefs to record the most important moment of marine conservation action in Taiwan in 2017.

Storm Drain Stenciling Event

The County of Maui is hosting a storm drain painting project to celebrate World Oceans Day. The painting event is part of the County’s Storm Water Management Program that is intended to reduce discharge of pollutants from the land and protect water quality.Volunteers are invited to paint awareness messages of “No Dumping – Drains to Ocean” at storm drain inlets to help people be mindful of how their actions on land can affect our stream and ocean health. When it rains, storm water runoff can carry plastic and other litter, motor oil, soaps and detergents, bacteria, excess fertilizers and pesticides, green waste and sediment to storm drains. Most storm drains flow to our streams and oceans, untreated.
