Celebrations Around the World!

Hundreds of events have been registered for World Oceans Day 2017! Check out the event map to find events happening near you around June 8. From beach cleanups to online webinars, and concerts to fun runs, there is a celebration for everyone this World Oceans Day. Here’s a snapshot of some of the events happening this year:

World Ocean Festival

Kick off your World Oceans Day celebrations at the World Ocean Festival in NYC on June 4! The Ocean Village on Governor Island will have family-friendly educational activities including exhibitions, panel discussions, and a Youth Ocean Rally with Sea Youth Rise Up 2017. There will also be an Ocean March, A first-of-its-kind parade of large and small boats on the water as a statement of unity for the ocean.

UN Oceans Conference

The high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development will be convened at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017, coinciding with World Oceans Day. The Governments of Fiji and Sweden have the co-hosting responsibilities of the Conference. Dozens of partnership dialogues, discussions and side events will be held all week.

S.E.A. Aquarium at Resort World Sentosa

This year, S.E.A. Aquarium has lined up a month of conservation-themed activities with the aim to raise awareness, and to educate and inspire ocean conservation with a renewed focus on plastic pollution. There will be a beach cleanup, storytelling, a photography contest, and more! S.E.A. Aquarium will also be working with local schools and organizations in their community to further educate the public about marine conservation.



Mystic Aquarium

Mystic Aquarium and West Marine’s BlueFuture Program are partnering to bring the ocean to you through engaging, hands-on activities during their biggest World Oceans Day celebration yet! Visit with local organizations that help to protect our ocean, learn how to make responsible and sustainable seafood purchases, discover how marine debris affects our oceans and explore solutions to the problem, plus so much more. Kids can even play in the mud – all in celebration of the influence our oceans have on the wellbeing of our planet.

Micronesian Conservation Coalition

Guam will be celebrating its first official World Oceans Day event this year! This event aims to bring together people from all over Guam and Micronesia for a day of culture, community and education. Family and friends will have a fun and educational event featuring local organizations and businesses.

Digital Explorer

To celebrate our blue planet, join the World Oceans Day Live event on YouTube on 8 June at 11:00 BST or 14:00 BST / 09:00 EDT. The hosts for this online event will be Dr. Lucy Woodall, marine biologist and principal scientist working at the University of Oxford and Digital Explorer director and co-founder Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop. Bring your class to one of the free YouTube live sessions to learn about the incredible marine life living deep underwater and the science behind submarine exploration.

North Carolina Aquariums

Join North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher or North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores for ocean-themed activities throughout the day! Both locations will celebrate the wonders of our beautiful blue planet and share easy ways we can all help make a difference. 

World Oceans Day Argentina

In Buenos Aires, head to a film screening of Racing Extinction hosted by World Oceans Day Argentina. In this internationally awarded documentary, a team of artists and activists expose the world of threatened species, with never before seen images that will change the way you see the planet.

Ripley’s Aquarium

Visit Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach to celebrate the ocean this World Oceans Day! The day will begin with a beach clean-up and end at the Aquarium plaza where there will be crafts, games and face painting. Fun information about how you can help protect the blue will also be given out.

South African Association for Marine Biological Research

Celebrate World Oceans Day with the South African Association for Marine Biological Research at uShaka Marine World with events starting on June 3! Find out how plastics are impacting turtles and the oceans and participate in special activities for all ages – coloring, games, special presentations, and a host of giveaways for lucky visitors. There will also be a beach clean on June 8! 

Shark Reef Aquarium

Head to Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay to visit green sea turtles, sawfish, sharks and more than 2,000 other animals in the exhibit while learning about the importance of sustainable seafood and keeping the oceans clean. Representatives from leading conservation groups, such as The Nature Conservancy and Reef Check will be on site to talk with guests about the world’s oceans and what can be done to protect them.
