World Oceans Day Events Across the Globe!

World Oceans Day is June 8th, but starting this weekend there will be many exciting events happening around the world to celebrate our shared ocean! From beach cleanups to barbecues, many thousands of people will attend unique celebrations to learn about the importance of the ocean and commemorate their connection to the sea. Here are just 6 of the many great events happening for World Oceans Day 2016:

Sydney SEA LIFE Aquarium

The Sydney SEA LIFE Aquarium will host An Ocean of Stars of June 8th in Sydney, Australia. It will be an exclusive after hours event where guests can learn about the “stars” of the ocean and come face to face with incredible marine life. There will also be information stands, talks by marine conservation organizations, and chances to win some prizes! Oceans Week Halifax

Oceans Week HFX offers an entire week of World Oceans Day celebrations in Halifax, Novia Scotia, Canada! Multiple venues in Halifax will participate in World Oceans Day hosting a variety of events. Some of the week’s highlights include:

  • June 4th: Arts & Crafts for the Oceans
  • June 5th: McNabs Island Beach Clean Up
  • June 8th: H2O Conference & Oceans Gala Dinner
  • June 9th: CaNOE Ocean Literacy Keynote- Dr. Erin Kelsey
  • June 12th: Yoga by the Sea

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Join the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in California, on June 4th and 5th for a two day World Oceans Day celebration! On Saturday and Sunday there will be live musical performances and kids crafts included with aquarium admission. The Monterey Bay Aquarium will also be presenting the Paul Walker Ocean Leadership Award to Adrian Grenier and Meg Kikkeri. Adrian Grenier is a passionate ocean advocate and the co-founder of the Lonely Whale Foundation, which works to generate collaborative philanthropy amongst organizations, scientists, policymakers, and communities who are working towards ocean conservation. Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

Email-BannerThe Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club will be celebrating World Oceans Day by launching a new initiative. Starting June 8th, the Club will stop using single use plastic bottles, bags and straws. Their goal is to decrease their operations negative impact on the environment and encourage their members to reduce, reuse and recycle. The OCEANEXT conference will take place in Nantes, France from June 8th until June 10th. The conference will bring together key scientists and stakeholders from multi-disciplinary areas of research around the sustainable use of ecosystem services and governance of marine and coastal areas. The conference themes build around the environmental and societal risks and opportunities for all our coastal and marine activities. World Oceans Week Argentina

Multiple events will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina during the week of World Oceans Day. There will be film exhibitions and talks throughout the week, as well as a coastal cleanup on June 7th. The closing event will be on June 12th with a SCUBA Dive instructor from Project Aware talking about underwater marine litter, shark awareness and the film Whale Rider from New Zealand.
